Local History Presentation: Juneteenth: Celebrating the End of Slavery in America

Local History Presentation: Juneteenth: Celebrating the End of Slavery in America Online

This program explores the history of one of America’s most recent federal holidays,  “Juneteenth.” The holiday commemorates June 19th, 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. This presentation explains the events that led up to the day, the people who have ensured that it is remembered, and why it is acknowledged by more Americans every year.
