Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Kennedy. These are familiar names to most Americans. But have you heard of Millard Fillmore, Chester A. Arthur, or Benjamin Harrison?

Historian and Lecturer Valerie Gugala will discuss these and other lesser-known Presidents in this PowerPoint presentation. We will discuss the lives of US presidents, including their journey to the presidency, their tenure, and their personal lives. We will also touch on their spouses, families, and post-presidential life.

About Valerie

Valerie Gugala is a historian and lecturer who has spent more than 50 years researching the Lincoln family and has been performing as and speaking about Mrs. Lincoln for over 25 years in addition to lecturing at schools, churches, libraries, senior groups, and park districts all across the United States. She has an extensive collection of books on the Lincoln family, with a focus on Mrs. Lincoln and their time in Springfield. She has conducted primary source research at various institutions, including the Chicago Historical Society, the Illinois State Historical Library, and the Batavia Depot Museum, and has used family letters, court documents, and period newspapers to write her performance and lecture outlines. Valerie is one of the founders of a group called "Mary Lincoln's Coterie," which is dedicated to preserving the memory and legacy of Mary Lincoln. The group holds monthly lectures and discussions via Zoom and has hosted a symposium every summer in Springfield, IL since 2001.
