Asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness and the number one cause of children missing school. The Asthma Flipchart Program will provide a workshop that teaches children and families how to control their asthma to reduce hospital visits and school absences.

Melesha Brissett, a Health Promotion Specialist at the American Lung Association, will speak about the importance of self-management education for asthma through the Asthma Flipchart Workshop.

During the workshop, you will learn the following: 

• To recognize triggers, symptoms, and warning signs.
• Take asthma medicines correctly.
• Problem-solving and self-management
• How to safely handle emergencies
   

Melesha Brissett is the Health Promotion Specialist at the American Lung Association and holds a Master's in Public Health Administration from PACE University. She is also a certified facilitator for the American Lung Association's Asthma Self-Management Education Programs. Among her many responsibilities, Melesha trains school nurses, staff, and college students to implement these programs in schools and youth-serving organizations. She has organized several asthma self-management workshops for parents, families, and students in the Hudson Valley area. Melesha's passion is driven by improving the lives of those with respiratory illnesses, particularly children. During her work, she has found that these program initiatives promote healthier and more active lifestyles for children while empowering parents to better advocate for their child's health.
